Crocheted Coral

April 29, 2012
During my last visit to Cape Town, I ended up at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront -- a destination I make sure to hit up every time I visit my parents. Not only do I have a habit of buying my mom some random piece of Carol Boyes implement, I also make sure to hit the craft markets.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project

This past February, I was quite intrigued to see a crocheted coral installation. The installation is a part of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project, which is spearheaded by the Institute For Figuring

Essentially, crochet was used to illustrate hyperbolic geometry and it turns out that the shapes correspond with the natural formation of coral. Pretty neat stuff.

The South African satellite site is The Woodstock Art Reef Project. The video and picture are from that installation. More pictures in the gallery.
